We spend over a third of our lifetime sleeping. In survey after survey, the most important thing we consider about our time asleep is the comfort of our bed. In the quest for a comfortable bed, our sheets/linens are one of the most important elements next to the perfect mattress.
Most of us have heard the word thread count before. But what does it really mean when we purchase bed linens that are 300-count sheets or even higher? Our goal is to help you rest easy about the topic by explaining some of the ins and outs of the sheet.
Perhaps one of the most daunting questions is, ‘what exactly is thread count’?
Thread count refers to the number of threads, both vertical and horizontal, in a one-inch square of fabric. The vertical threads are known as the warp and the horizontal threads are known as the weft.
What is Ply?
The ply of the fabric refers to how many threads are wrapped together into a single thread. Single–ply fabrics use threads on their own, while two-ply fabrics twist two pieces together into a stronger thread, and can double the count of the fabric.
Finer thread results in more threads per square inch. The main reason why many people choose to buy fabrics with a higher thread count is that it results in a smoother fabric. A finer thread could result in a very delicate fabric. Two-ply fabrics can resolve this problem by strengthening the weave as well as increasing the thread count of the fabric by double.
A luxury fabric such as Amancara’s would range from a thread count of 500. Different weaves and various fabrics will create a unique feel. For example, a cotton percale sheet is crisper and a more traditional style sheet, while cotton sateen is silkier and has a bit of a sheen to it. In a completely different luxury category stands the highly desired linen sheets. The fabric results in a cooler touch due to the airy pockets in their weave. Perfect for summer months or more tropical climes.
All of Amancara’s sheets are in the luxury range and are suitable for all seasons while providing an enjoyable night’s sleep. In addition, many of our products are hand embroidered and produced in Italy by some of the most experienced craftsmen in the world.
